Staying the Course: Technology Makers
As our series of Staying the Course videos continues, declaring the values, virtues and commitments that ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ will stand upon as we chart the future, we turn our attention today to technology education. Our area has led the world in technological innovation over the past generation, and exciting new technologies are being born around us constantly. For years, ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ students have graduated and gone to work at the amazing technology companies around us like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Boeing, and many others, but until recently, we have done little to educate them formally for such careers. In recent years, we have added majors in computer science and user experience design, and in the future we will do much more to prepare our students for leadership in technology fields.
We want you to know why we think technology fits into the curriculum of a Christian university. The psychiatrist Sigmund Freud once wrote that “guilt is the mother of civilization,” reflecting on the fact that the Bible mentions Cain as the founder of the first city. Pretty much everything Freud wrote about psychology has proven to be wrong, and he clearly had little expertise as an interpreter of the Bible. Far from arising as a result of the fall, the human gift for inventing technologies came from the basic human nature that God built into us. When God gave human beings the primordial call in Genesis 1:28 to “be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it,” the commandment corresponded to the nature God gave us to fulfill it. Technology is one of the ways we have obeyed God in stewarding the earth and making it a better “habit for humanity.” God did not create us to sit out in the cold and let the waves of misfortune crash over us, but rather made us to take charge of the world and work proactively to make the best life possible for our families and neighbors.
We don’t believe technology can save humanity. Our salvation does not depend on colonizing Mars or becoming a multi-planetary species or anything like that. We live securely in the knowledge that God has been working out a plan of salvation for us since before the foundation of the world. But when we make life in the world better through technology, we glorify God. In the near future, ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ students will enjoy strong academic programs in technology to help them excel in technological industries and take the lead in reflecting Christian values as technology shapes our world.
