Position Summary
As a member of the Student Development team, this administrator provides leadership for a dynamic and multifaceted department that oversees the Student Government (ASNU), Student Activities Board (SAB), a semesterly Welcome Weekend program, and supports the functions of student clubs and organizations. The department promotes the holistic development of undergraduate students through vibrant programs that foster leadership and academic growth. This is a full-time 1.0 FTE position with benefits. Evening and weekend work is often required.
Essential Functions
Overall Functions
- Oversee, develop, implement, advise, and assess associated departmental areas.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff partners for joint curricular and co-curricular educational initiatives.
- Represent areas under purview to the student development management team and university committees.
- Serve as a member of the Student Leadership Team to assist with selection, training, and general tasks.
- Serves as an essential employee during university crises, as needed.
- Manage budgets associated with programs of oversight.
Student Government (ASNU)
- Support the overall function of ASNU as the advisor.
- Recruit, train and develop ASNU Executive Team through one-on-ones and team meetings.
- Work primarily with the ASNU Executive Team to oversee overall ASNU and Senate function and development.
- Coordinate with club leaders as they plan events and programs for the community.
- Advise the Student Senate and legislative process through regular attendance and counsel.
- Support strategic planning and oversight of student clubs and organizations, and give final approval from Student Life Office.
Student Activities Board (SAB)
- Recruit, train and develop student activities board leaders through one-on-ones and team meetings. Approximately seven team members.
- Create an inclusive semesterly training program that prepares student leaders for their role and impact on campus.
- Supervise and direct SAB team in development, planning and execution of an inclusive activities program.
- Lead the coordination, approval, and oversight of the SAB calendar in collaboration with departments across campus.
Welcome Weekend
- Coordinate and execute a comprehensive welcome weekend program for entering students both in the fall and spring.
- Recruit, train and hire two Welcome Weekend Assistants and up to 60 Welcome Weekend Leaders.
- Partner with faculty for annual coordination of Welcome Weekend groups that transition to first-year seminar general education course for Peer Mentor leadership.
- Chair Welcome Weekend Committee for cross-departmental partnership, planning, and procedures.
- Develop and refine initiatives to meet institutional mission and educational objectives.
- Assist in the orchestration of Summer Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) days through parent sessions and recruitment of SOAR Assistant student leaders.
Programming and Student Engagement
- Manage the operations, training, and marketing of NUConnect software system.
- Coordinate and send the Life at NU weekly communication.
- Oversee implementation of a student development calendar by working with other departments on campus.
- Co-Chair the Calendar Review Committee and Calendar Stakeholder Sub-Committee to coordinate and collaborate with other departments on university-wide programming.
- Coordinate and create programming for Family Weekend, the semesterly Late Night Breakfast, commuters, graduating seniors, and other specific groups on campus.
Additional Requirements
- Serve as a member of multiple university committees: Welcome Weekend (Chair), Co-Chair Calendar Review Committee, Student Development Management Team, Commencement Committee, Judicial Council, and others as assigned.
- Responsibility for associated areas often requires a fluctuating work schedule, including frequent evening, occasional weekend hours and infrequent travel due to activities, meetings, and events that fall outside of traditional work times.
- The director meets with individual students and groups to provide ongoing mentoring, advising, and development.
- Perform other duties as requested and assigned.
Education/Experience/Skills
- Masters’s degree required in education, ministry, social work, leadership, or related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience working in Student Development, Human Services, Education, Counseling, or related field.
- Experience in co-curricular involvement during undergraduate studies.
- High level of initiative, planning and organizational skills.
- A proven track record of working effectively with diverse populations in groups and individually, as well as with a collaborative work team.
- Strong ability in program evaluation and ability to develop and implement programming interventions.
- Demonstrated leadership in community setting.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication.
- Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects at one time.
- Comfort in self-directed work, but ability to thrive in cooperative team environment.
- Sound judgment, positive and flexible attitude, highly dependble.
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a safe work environment free of harassment, violence, and unlawful discrimination.
Physical Demands
The functions are usually performed while standing, but may involve some amount of time sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting (max. of 40 lbs.), walking, carrying, reaching, stretching, climbing, performing repetitive motions of the hands or wrists, and other movements. The abilities of seeing, hearing, and speaking are also required.
Compensation
Based on education and experience, the position has a hiring range of $22.00/hour to $23.90/hour plus excellent benefits.
