Faculty Spotlight: Ashley Ott
Nursing professor and alumna Ashley Ott shares about her experience in the Buntain College of Nursing and the missionary work she is currently doing in Africa.
The nursing profession has changed quite drastically over the past twenty years, but God’s promises and specific calling on my life has not waivered.
I graduated from the Mark and Huldah Buntain College of Nursing at ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ in 2005. The curriculum, the focus on cross-cultural nursing, and the devoted professors prepared me to say “yes!” to the seemingly impossible things God called me to be part of.
After graduation, I went on to form an organization called Hummingbird Medical Resources that collaborates with medical professionals and churches in Belize and Burundi. Most recently, I partnered with a group of Christian public health doctors in Bujumbura, Burundi, to launch a vision called The Mosaic Project.
This project is designed to provide medical care to disadvantaged and displaced people in the village of Gatumba. We will treat malaria, respiratory illnesses, and sexually transmitted diseases. The project will also offer a women’s vocational school to prepare women who have been victims of abuse and neglect with practical skills like sewing so they are empowered to provide for their families. The women will also receive faith-based counseling to restore their self-esteem and self-worth.
In addition, the project will offer a professional training center for the community. The Mosaic Project is a holistic approach to health care, with an emphasis on caring for the mind, body, and soul. Second Corinthians 5:17 states: “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (NLT). This is the heartbeat of The Mosaic Project in Burundi.
I came to ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ in 2001 as a student called to be a missionary nurse, and twenty years later, I am seeing God’s promises and calling fulfilled. God has so much more in store for me, and I am excited to say “YES!” to the adventures that await me as I pursue His calling.
